Private label products are manufactured by a contract or third-party manufacturer and sold under a retailer or brand’s name. In other words, clothing that is manufactured by one company and sold under the brand name of another company. As the Brand or Retailer, you specify what goes into your garment, how it’s packaged, what the label looks like – and pay to have it produced and delivered to you. You have total control of your marketing and advertising campaigns as well. This is in contrast with buying products from other companies with their brand names on them. Some companies call these brands “Owned Brands” or “In-House Brands” rather than private label. Most consumers are unaware of the difference.
White Label clothing is usually a basic generic product produced by a manufacturer that other designers rebrand to make their own.
One of the main differences between private label and white label brands is that private label brands are made for exclusive sale by a specific seller, and that seller can alter or enhance a product any way it wants.
That freedom doesn’t exist with white label brands, because manufacturers sell these products to multiple retailers, who then repackage the product under their own brand name without changing it and sell it to consumers.
You do need capital to launch a private label business because you will have to pay for initial product runs, branding, design, marketing, shipping and customer service. Additionally, when costing this can vary greatly based on the brands design. The design will affect the labor cost and is also dependent on cost of textiles and trims, dying processes, screen printing, digital printing, color possibilities, labeling, and packaging of each design/garment. Typically, in apparel manufacturing, the more units you purchase up front, the cheaper the per-unit cost will be.
On occasion big retailers will call these brands “Owned-Brands” rather than private label. Some examples include:
is lounge and outwear brand created for the retailer Aritza.
clothing brand for the retailer Nordstrom.
brand denim for Revolve
Boutique and Department Stores with Brick-and-Mortar locations as well as all Ecommerce online stores purchase products at a wholesale price from brands or vendors. The actual definition of wholesale or wholesale clothing is the selling of goods in large quantities to be retailed by others. These buys are usually done at trade shows, showrooms, and online platforms.
